School Nurses have helped children, young people and families be health for over a century. In Scotland today many families live in poverty and with pressures which affect many areas of their health. School Nurses play a pivotal role in promoting good health, preventing ill health and supporting schools and families to have the best possible outcomes.
There are a number of highly skilled nurses and assistants working as part of the team which supports children, young people, families, schools and communities. If you are needing help or advice, you will be guided to the right member of the team with the right skills.
Helping Schools
School Nursing Teams have a key role to play in supporting schools as part of the health and wellbeing curriculum. All children will still be offered core services such as growth and health assessments, transition assessments and health promotion in schools and communities.
In addition, School Nurses will focus on young people who face additional challenges according the 10 areas identified by the Scottish Government.
The School Nursing Team work closely with other health services and are able to sign post/refer children to specific services depending on the assessed need of the child or young person.
School Nurses and their teams are here to help all children, young people and families across Highland. They understand that the health of one member of a family affects all, so they use their specialist skills to help the whole family avoid more serious health concerns and offer intensive support to those with complex need.
School Nurses work within the Health and Social Care Family Teams as part of local communities across Highland. They work as part of Integrated Services (integrated children's service plan link) as part of the whole system of family support in Highland, alongside healthcare support, GP's, education staff, social work staff and those in the 3rd sector, ensuring families get the right help at, the right time, by the right person.
