There are many ways that the School Nursing Team can help you and your family to make sure your child is happy, healthy, safe and achieving the best they can.
How we can help?
We help families with children in School, but also help families and children of school age that do not attend school for varying reasons.
We provide whole family support particularly where there are emotional and mental health pressures, drug and alcohol problems, when families are separated, and when children may be cared for away from home.
We can help if your child has sleep, bladder and bowel problems or food and diet concerns or if sexual health support is needed.
Universal Screening
We carry out universal screening when your child start P1 which includes weight and height measurements and a vision screening. We will always communicate any findings with you via letter and you are always welcome to contact us directly if you have any concerns or queries. We understand that children can find it challenging when transitioning from nursery into P1 and from P7 into Secondary School. If you feel your child requires support with this, please contact us.
School Drop Ins
We offer drop in sessions to most secondary schools in Highland and are available to children and young people should they have any health or wellbeing related queries. We will always try to include you in the care of your child and encourage your child to communicate openly with you.
Jags/Immunisations- now given by the Community Vaccination Teams- contact details on 'contact us' page.
Children under 16 are entitled to free NHS funded eye test every year. They're also eligible for an NHS optical voucher. This helps towards the help of glasses.
Children are entitled to free NHS funded dental care in Scotland. For further information, please visit Childsmile here. If your child has a dental emergency, please visit NHS Highland Dental Helpline here.
(United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child)
The UNCRC is an internationally agreed document. It recognises the importance of children’s rights and freedoms. The UNCRC is split up into lots of different parts, called articles. Each article sets out the different rights children have. (click on the picture on the left to find out more about your child's rights).
Your child's right to confidentiality
Children under the age of 16 can consent to their own treatment if they are believed to have enough intelligence, competence and understanding to fully appreciate what's involved in their treatment. We understand that as a parent, you may wish to be included and consulted with, in relation to your child's health and wellbeing. Please be assured that wherever possible we will keep you informed and encourage your child to share their concerns with you. You are free to contact us at any time to discuss any concerns you may have.
Individuals aged 16 or over are entitled to consent to their own treatment. This can only be overruled in exceptional circumstances. Again, we would always encourage your child to discuss any concerns with their parents wherever appropriate.
For more information on child's rights to confidentiality, please visit NSPCC website.
