We know that everyone’s lives are different and not everything is easy or goes to plan. We will help you both in and out of school to find you support if things are difficult. We will always find ways to work with you that make you feel safe and comfortable. If you are worried or concerned about your health or anything is keeping you from feeling happy and healthy, you can speak to your school nurse, or any trusted adult.
We also know that as you grow through your teenage years you will be able to make decision about your own health. We will work with you, enabling you to make safe decisions and choices about your health as far as possible. To read more about children's rights- visit the UNCRC Webpage.
We understand that some things may be very sensitive and you may want to talk privately. We respect the importance of this private space between you and ourselves as health professionals.
Wherever possible your health information will be kept confidential. We will always talk with you if we need to pass on any information.
What if it's not just about me?
We know that while you may have reached out to us, your parent, carer or family may also need support or help. We can help you with this. The nursing teams are able to support all the family, particularly where there are emotional and mental health pressures, drug and alcohol concerns, when families are separated, and when children may be cared for away from home.
School Nurse teams can also help when there are sleep, bladder and bowel problems or food and diet concerns or if sexual health support is needed.
As well as the school nurse there are many good websites which can help you such as; Highland Substance Awareness Toolkit (HSAT), Highland Sexual Health Webpage & Supporting the wellbeing of our C&YP.
There are many more links that you may find helpful at the bottom of the page.
How do I speak to a School Nurse?
If you are a child or young person – you can speak to your teacher or guidance teacher to talk through if a referral to a School Nurse might help; or you can visit the drop in sessions at some of the high schools; or you can talk to your GP; or talk to your parent or carer who can link with all these people too.
You can self refer by scanning the QR code to the left to send an email to your local School Nursing Team. If you would like to contact us by telephone, you will find the contact number for your local team on the 'contact us' page.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is a list of rights that countries around the world agree that all children have. Click on the video on the left to find out more about your rights.
